Introducing our BodyBlitz Grand Champ

There’s a lot of lip service paid to making sure you stay motivated in order to achieve your goals, but in the case of Jeremy Zadow, the 2008 BodyBlitz Grand Champion, it truly was his mindset that made all the difference. Throughout every workout and every healthy meal, his mind was focused. It wasn’t easy, but 2008 was Jeremy Zadow’s year.

See, Jeremy’s life had been in a bit of a rut. Things were tough in the Mildura building industry, where Jeremy had worked for 20 years, and he was in need of a change. Well, he got one, in the form of the 12-week BodyBlitz Challenge.

Every person who participates in the BodyBlitz Challenge has his or her own motivations for doing so, and this manifests itself in the way s/he not only approaches their training, but their life afterwards. For Jeremy, what has remained resonant for him is his realisation that the time to get things happening was now or never.

“I suppose I was cornered a little bit with opportunities and unhappiness with the way I looked and my confidence in my appearance,” he says.

Once upon a time Jeremy would finish work and pick up a six-pack of beer on the way home. He’d be too tired to help out around the house and he tended to be sluggish when he did.

But after running into a friend he hadn’t seen for a long time, he became inspired to get his health and his body under control once and for all. This inspiring friend? Rick Brennan, 2003 BodyBlitz Challenge Grand Champion.

Rick, now a successful gym owner and personal trainer, drew up a plan for Jeremy to follow. Jeremy followed it to the letter, knowing that Rick had a of wealth knowledge to share and that it would be to Jeremy’s benefit if he took Rick’s advice seriously.

When Jeremy saw what Rick had accomplished — the amazing transformation he had made — he realised that he too could achieve something.

“I rang Rick and said, ‘Listen, I want to do this thing, can you make me some programs, gym routines and also what I need in regards to my cardio?’” Jeremy says. “He set down all my gym programs and he advised me on what supplements to take during the 90 days which would enable me to still function, as well as chew down the excess weight that I did have.”

Jeremy also enlisted the help of another BodyBlitz veteran — Adam Ferry, a previous monthly winner — to be his personal trainer. With the help of Adam and Rick, Jeremy was able to stop worrying about whether he was doing the right exercises and eating properly for his goals — he already knew their efforts had produced results. This way Jeremy could just concern himself with the hard yards of lifting, running and eating clean.

These guardian angels also provided continuous inspiration. “When you’re connected to someone closely who has done a similar thing to what you would like to do, you find it easy,” says Jeremy. “Because if they can do it, and you know what they’ve been through and what they were before they did it, it’s more realistic. You can understand that if they can do it, you can do it.”

Jeremy was in the gym three times a week, pushing himself with all the bicep curls, cable crossovers and lat pulldowns he could handle. In addition to his intense gym work, Jeremy took up some light cardio. Well, not quite light. Because cutting fat was so important, Jeremy would go for an 7.5 km walk every morning and every night.

He kept this up even when he was out relaxing. At his sister-in-law’s 30th birthday party he went for a 10 km walk just to keep up his cardio training. This is the kind of focus that has typified Jeremy’s journey.
“At the end of the day it’s hard to say what keeps you focused, but when you are backed into a corner in any situation you’ve got no choice but to remain focused because it’s for the better,” says Jeremy. “You’ve got nowhere else to go so once you’re in a corner you’ve got to move forward.”

Continuing to move forward has served Jeremy well, keeping him motivated long after the 90 day challenge was over. After winning his monthly BodyBlitz Challenge, Jeremy kept up his training and stayed in shape, albeit with a few changes to his routine.

He let himself start having cheat days, where he allowed himself to have that plate of pasta or the odd beer. But now that he’s achieved his initial goal, he does want to make sure he keeps all of his achievements intact.

“I’m happy with what weight I’ve got, what muscle I’ve got; now it’s just a matter of now keeping it maintained,” Jeremy says. “I do short, sharp, explosive sessions of about 30-40 minutes just to keep things in tune so I can stay looking good and keep what I actually set out to achieve; and worry about the rest later with getting bigger or leaner or any of that kind of stuff.”

Now that Jeremy has seen what determination, focus and lots of hard work can yield, he’s got his sights set on a future in the fitness industry. Not only is he now studying to be a professional personal trainer, he is also looking to compete in amateur bodybuilding competitions.

“Yeah, I’d really love to follow on from where I’m at in the athletic divisions of bodybuilding,” Jeremy says. “That’s just depending on work and other commitments — getting bread and milk on the table so to speak. So that’s probably more important at this stage, but I’d really love to pursue it and I think I’ve got what it takes — the right mindset.”

The right mindset has been the key to Jeremy’s success, both in the BodyBlitz competition and in his life generally. So, what’s Jeremy’s advice to aspiring BodyBlitz entrants?

“Keep a firm eye on where you want to end up but realise you can’t just have a straight run to that goal, to where you want to end up. It’s one of those life things you learn as you go and I’ve definitely learnt a lot about myself in the last 6-8 months with what I’m capable of.”

This new attitude has extended into Jeremy’s professional and personal life and has affected the way he approaches everything from his business decisions and his family life to his overall happiness. It’s the attitude of a true BodyBlitz winner; a champion.

“You can suck eggs and stay doing what you’re doing or you can get out there and try and see what can become of it,” he says. “That way, the question marks in life are never going to come back and haunt you; you’ve ticked the boxes to say ‘I did give that a go’.”
