Persistence Pays

For many people, getting motivated and staying that way is one of the hardest things to do. For Jo Csik, our 2010 BodyBlitz male Grand Champion, it’s the key to success, as Daniel Hedger discovers.

Jonathan CsikJo Csik is a softly spoken 35-year-old, originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, who now lives and works in Townsville, Queensland. He loves Australia, saying he made the jump across because, “I got sick of the cold weather. And wages and work conditions are so much better here, there’s a lot more opportunity here.”

Jo works as a microbiologist for the Townsville City Council. “I pretty much keep an eye on all the drinking water and all the discharges and that sort of thing,” he says. “So it’s not a physical job; it’s nine hours a day at a desk.”

Jo had entered the BodyBlitz challenge twice before, years ago, but was unhappy with his results. The first time he entered, he was still living in New Zealand. “I think I headed too hard right from the start, and just burned out after a month,” Jo says. “I had good results after a month, but it wasn’t realistic.”

Jo thinks he might have been a bit too sure of himself to take the competition with the gravity he now knows you need to succeed. “I guess I was young and I was training with a few different guys and I just thought this would be something good to do,” he says. “I thought that I’d probably do better than what I had.”

Jonathan CsikHowever, Jo was persistent and tried again a little while later, after he moved to Australia in 2001. This time around he wanted to make sure he didn’t burn out, so his strategy was to pace himself. “The last time I entered I did finish,” he says, “but I probably paced myself a bit too much.” The end result was that he wasn’t happy with his overall outcome and didn’t get the results he was looking for.

But it was third time lucky for Jo, who not only impressed judges with his end results for the BodyBlitz challenge, but also touched them with his persistent and dedicated attitude (continued...)
