Before the 12-week challenge I wouldn’t say I was unfit, but I really didn’t respect my body. I drank and ate what I wanted and was thankful that I had a fairly good metabolism. My wife was the one who challenged me to do the 12-week challenge with her. I was feeling unhappy with my body and fitness and thought perhaps this was the thing to help me become motivated.
At first everything went well and I was slowly losing weight. I started to feel really good and started to see results. My wife also started to see huge results and as we are very competitive, we would push each other. My wife ended up losing six kilograms and I am so happy that I could help her to achieve her goals, just like she helped me.
The 12-week challenge bought us closer together as a family. Whenever possible we worked out together. At the beginning, we decided as a family to run the 4.5 km Mothers’ Day Classic fun run. I ran while pushing both our six-year-old and three-year old sons in the pram (40 kg of weight!). We completed the run and I came 15th! We then kept training and have competed in another run together doing a personal best time. Now my six-year-old son has decided he wants to get into running and I couldn’t be happier. He just came third in his cross-country!
A big change for me was deciding not to drink for the 12 weeks. I was a big drinker before, having a few every night. At first I didn’t know if I could do it, but being able to wake up every morning feeling healthy and strong helped me to keep motivated. Now that I have finished the 12-week challenge, I still have no desire to drink. I’m really happy to have changed my life and I feel I have become a better example for my sons.
I now enjoy life and respect my body. The 12-week challenge has inspired me to keep training and set bigger goals. I’m already planning my next 12-week challenge. To be continued! IM
