Donna’s story
After 42 years of over-indulgence and a very erratic exercise regime, the inconsistency was starting to catch up on me. Over the past few years I had been suffering from terrible sleeping and eating patterns, so as a mother of three with a husband working long hours, a good sleep was something I could only hope for. Sleep deprived and lethargic, I began using food to try and make myself feel better. Yet it wasn't the good food I was reaching for, it was anything high in sugar and fat. Instead of making me feel better, I ended up feeling worse and even more depressed; it was a vicious merry-go-round that I couldn't seem to stop.
The turnaround came after opening up to a close friend of mine who had just completed the 12-Week BodyBlitz Challenge with terrific results. I explained how I was feeling and she encouraged me to try the Challenge. She told me I’d be amazed at just how good I felt. It helped knowing how much exercise had helped my friend and I started to believe that maybe I could feel better too – it was time for me to finally do something
for myself!
With the support of my amazing husband I started the program, I was both excited and nervous about not wanting to let anyone down. I had those thoughts weighing up inside; ‘Could I really do this, could I finish what I started?’ Yet with the help, support and encouragement of my family and friends, I quickly adopted good eating habits and exercise patterns that fitted into my busy schedule of raising a family. It wasn’t too long until all my negative thoughts became positive ones. I realised how important exercise was, not only for my health and fitness, but also for my mind! I couldn't believe how much better I was feeling.
There were times when it was hard to keep going; I got sick, then the kids got sick and it all seemed too hard. However, with constant reassurance that ‘no one is perfect’ and it's all about doing the best you can each day, I kept going. I noticed that as I changed and became happier, so too did my family. I finally realised that it's not selfish to look after yourself and taking some time for ‘me’ actually benefited the whole family.
I have now become a great role model for my family. We all eat healthier and exercise regularly – my husband also lost 13 kilos! You see, it's not just about how you look, but how you feel, and no new outfit or chocolate donut could ever make me feel like I do right now! If you have any doubts like I once did and think you can't do it, you are so wrong. Anybody can do it, you just need to make the decision and go for it.

Budget - friendly eating:

Buy generic brands: many generic foods such as rice, pasta and beans are cheaper and contain the same quality standard as the more expensive brands.

Purchase snap-frozen vegetables: Research shows that frozen vegies can often contain more nutrients than those on the shelf.

Prepare: Get organised by making lunch the night before or preparing pre-cooked meals in freezer and microwave safe containers for fast-healthy food on the run.

Grow your own: Contact your local nursery for the best vegies to grow this season for vegetables that are always on hand.

Plan: Make a list of everything you need before you hit the shops. This will avoid in buying those things you really don’t need.

Daily easting Plan

I never ate anything after dinner, as this time of day had previously been my biggest downfall
I drank at least two litres of water a day and had the very occasional vanilla latte – yum!

(whole family)
